Sunday Times Teaser 2628 – Unnaturally Quiet

I have assigned a different number between 0 and 25 inclusive (in some order) to each letter of the alphabet so that, for example, three letter words represent numbers with between three and six digits.

When translated into numbers using this order NATURAL is equal to NUMBER

What is the sum of the digits in the number represented by MUTE?

    This was one of the hardest puzzles to program in recent times!

    Arthur’s approach (below) is a much faster and better route to the solution than mine above. In fact I think it is even faster if it is approached starting from the other end of the words as follows:
