Sunday Times Teaser 2643 – Pack Points

Sunday Times Teaser 2643 – Pack Points

by Angela Newing

Five cub scouts were each awarded points for their efforts.

The sum of the points awarded to Mrs Smith’s and Enid’s sons was 17. The similar totals for Mrs Jones and Mrs Robinson sons, for Ivan and Mrs Robinson’s son, and for the two youngest cubs were 16, 14 and 13 respectively.

The sums for John and Mrs Brown’s son, for Brenda’s son and Mike, for Ken and his best friend, for Anne’s and Debbie’s sons, for Christine’s son and Nigel, and for Mrs Perkins and Debbie’s sons were 12, 11, 10, 9, 8 and 6 respectively.

In alphabetical order of their mother’s first names, what were the full names (first name and surname) of the five cubs?

My thanks to Arthur for presenting an analysis that allows a space of 18^5 to be replaced by a space of C(18, 5).[

  2. A perfect fit for the “Who owns the Zebra” template:

The Teaser gives us 6,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,16 and 17 as pairs of sums of points which implies 2,4,6,7 and 10 must be distributed among the cub scouts as a result of which one can reach to the solution.
