Sunday Times Teaser 2779 – New Year Party
by Nick MacKinnon
The names of those attending our planned party will be written on slips of paper that will then be given out randomly, one to each person present.
The slips will be collected and redistributed randomly until nobody receives a slip with their own name on it.
We then plan to ask everyone to link their right hand with the left hand of the person named on their slip in order to form a single circle. But we have worked out that the chance of this happening is just less than even.
How many people will there be at the party?
